The forests of the Victorian High Country are a photographer’s dream. Jurassic Park-like towering tree ferns can be found around every turn, and the speckled snow gums rising majestically from lush forest floors sprinkled with native wildflowers in bright yellows, purples and pinks give this region of Victoria a startling and distinct beauty.

The rivers and creeks burbling through verdant forests present endless options for picnic spots and swimming holes, and the pebbled river crossings are one of the many reasons that 4WD enthusiasts love this sprawling natural paradise.

Hit the slopes

If you are a skier or snowboarder, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to hitting the slopes and relaxing in picture-perfect Alpine resorts in Falls Creek, Hotham and Mt Buller. Mt Buller is Victoria’s most popular snow resort, and has runs for beginner to advanced skiers. In winter, the place is a white wonderland blanketed in snow,  but when the snow starts to melt the landscape springs to life with blossoms and wildlife. On bush walks you will see a breathtaking landscape characterised by mountain peaks, waterfalls and high plains.

Craig’s Hut.

The Victorian High Country is peppered with huts that were used by early explorers for shelter, one of the most famous being Craig’s Hut atop Mount Stirling, which was built for the movie The Man From Snowy River. The original burnt down in the 2006 bushfires, but locals banded together and a new one has been built, surrounded by picnic areas and with some of the best mountain views in the region. Take the Clear Hills Track to reach it.
