Imagine flying towards your island accommodation, seeing the patchwork of yellows, greens and blues from the sky, then noticing more detail as the plane gets closer and closer. Welcome to the Top End’s newest travel experience – Tiwi Island Retreat.
The Tiwi Islands sit 80 kilometres north of Darwin and consist of two main islands – Bathurst and Melville. Tiwi Island Retreat is the region’s newest offering. It’s idyllically positioned on a remote and pristine beachfront location on the south-west coast of Bathurst Island. Guests are being welcomed from April 2020, with bookings now open.
National Geographic’s Outback Wrangler, Matt Wright, owner and operator of Matt Wright: Explore the Wild tours, has carefully curated a collection of all-inclusive, two-day-two-night stays which encompass the best of what the Tiwi Islands have to offer – nature, wildlife, culture and relaxation.
Why stay?
If you’re looking to get away from the bustle of city life, the Tiwi Islands Retreat is for you. Matt says, “We have one-off experiences on the land where you can get up close with wildlife, catch incredible fish, and switch off and unwind in one of the most untouched ecosystems there is.”
Adventure seekers can jump right into the outback and fishing adventures. These include world-class fishing charters, helicopter and 4WD buggy tours, and more. Indigenous art and cultural tours will undoubtedly be a highlight. And there’s plenty more to see and do; relaxing by the 12-metre onsite pool between activities is a great way to recharge batteries.
Who’s invited?
Everyone is welcome at Tiwi Island Retreat, with the all-inclusive package options offering something for all ages and interests. Travellers looking for authentic, adventure-based experiences, independent guests, couples, small and large groups, corporate travellers… the retreat is for anyone who wants to reconnect with nature in a real, hands-on way.
Organised fun
All packages are all-inclusive and designed to suit all travel styles. It’s easy to add on optional tours and activities that showcase the best of the Tiwi Islands. Inclusions span everything from the return private charter flights ex Darwin and on-ground transfers to air-conditioned twin share accommodation and all-meals canapes, snacks and non-alcoholic refreshments. Perhaps you’ll enjoy a professionally guided full-day fishing tour in a custom-built 12-metre catamaran and three hours of mud-crabbing. Maybe you’re more keen on being helicoptered to a remote swimming hole for a dip and gourmet picnic lunch. Or enjoying a lengthy cultural tour with hands-on artistic activities. (Permits and guiding inclusions are dependent on the tours booked.)
